The Perinatal Continuum (And Why Systems Miss It)

The perinatal period includes pregnancy, birth, postpartum recovery, lactation (if applicable), and reintegration into daily life and work. Yet most medical and workplace systems treat postpartum as a six-week recovery window rather than a long adaptation period that can last 12–24 months.

During this time, the body is rebalancing hormones, replenishing nutrients, repairing tissue, and regulating the nervous system, all while women are often expected to return to full productivity.

Why the Science Is Incomplete

Until 1993, women - especially pregnant and breastfeeding women - were largely excluded from clinical trials. This changed with the NIH Revitalization Act, but its effects still linger.

The Absence of Postpartum Guidelines

There are no standardized postpartum nutrition guidelines in the U.S. Lactation guidelines exist, but they prioritize infant outcomes, not maternal recovery.
